On Sunday April 26th we participated again in the "Carrera Arcoiris 2015" a short fun family run to raise funds to help children with cancer. The event has been organized by a local Rotary Club for 25 years. I have the privilege of going for almost 10 years, initially on my own and later with my kids and pets.
Founded in 1997, Fundación Ayudame a Vivir - AYUVI, is the fundraising arm of the Children Oncology wing of a national hospital (UNOP). Teamed with Women in Rotary they bring more and more people every year to participate in this festival to help the children. It is an event where not only funds are collected, support and awareness also are important outcomes of the day.
AYUVI has other initiatives to raise funds and voluntary work. They have raffles, sponsor programs, and more. Thanks to the work of AYUVI and UNOP about 70% of children diagnosed with cancer are cured. The conditions for the children and their families are outstanding which in a country like Guatemala is amazing. Many patients suffer in addition to cancer, malnutrition, infections and other problems, needing a broader treatment. AYUVI found that children supported by their relatives had less abandonment than those who stayed alone. However their families face a huge opportunity cost by staying with their sick child while leaving their work and the rest of the family behind. To improve the chances of success of the treatments AYUVI started offering support to the families too.

Congratulations to both organizations for your work, you can count on us.
